Analysis of Potential for Linear Erosion in the Cerrado Biome Using Morphopedology Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Maranhão,Deyvid Diego Carvalho; Aguado,Oscar Ivan de Oro; Pereira,Marcos Gervasio; Araújo,Adelson Paulo; Castro,Selma Simões de; Ferreira Júnior,Laerte Guimarães.
ABSTRACT The Cerrado is a vegetation complex with a wide variety of phytophysiognomies, and sustainable management is essential for maintaining biodiversity. Morphopedology is a tool that can assist in developing plans for control of soil and land use, especially in evaluating the potential of soil erosion processes. This technique allows landscape units considered “homogeneous” to be distinguished, as a result of interaction between physiographic conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate potential for erosion in São Miguel do Araguaia, state of Goiás, Brazil, through definition of morphopedological compartments (MPC), on the assumption that soil use has increased erosion. Landscape units were identified through use of geology overlay, hypsometry,...

Boundary between Soil and Saprolite in Alisols in the South of Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Pedron,Fabrício de Araújo; Oliveira,Rodrigo Bomicieli de; Dalmolin,Ricardo Simão Diniz; Azevedo,Antonio Carlos de; Kilca,Ricardo Vargas.
Despite numerous studies conducted on the lower limit of soil and its contact with saprolite layers, a great deal of work is left to standardize identification and annotation of these variables in the field. In shallow soils, the appropriately noting these limits or contacts is essential for determining their behavior and potential use. The aims of this study were to identify and define the field contact and/or transition zone between soil and saprolite in profiles of an Alisol derived from fine sandstone and siltstone/claystone in subtropical southern Brazil and to subsequently validate the field observations through a multivariate analysis of laboratory analytical data. In the six Alisol profiles evaluated, the sequence of horizons found was A, Bt, C,...

Brazilian soil science: from its inception to the future, and beyond Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Camargo,Flavio A. de Oliveira; Alvarez V.,Víctor Hugo; Baveye,Philippe C..
The present essay is meant to provide some background on the evolution of the soil science community in Brazil, since its inception, to describe its current situation, and to outline a number of opportunities and challenges facing the discipline in decades to come. The origin of Brazilian agronomy dates back to the beginning of the 19th century as a subdiscipline of botany, and its association with chemistry would later establish it as a science. In the middle of the 19th century, agricultural chemistry was born as a result of this association, leading to the establishment of edaphology, a branch of Soil Science. Another branch of Soil Science, known as pedology, was established as an applied and scientific knowledge in Brazil during the middle of the 20th...

Digital soil class mapping in Brazil: a systematic review Scientia Agricola
Coelho,Fabrício Fernandes; Giasson,Elvio; Campos,Alcinei Ribeiro; Tiecher,Tales; Costa,José Janderson Ferreira; Coblinski,João Augusto.
ABSTRACT: In Brazil several digital soil class mapping studies were carried out from 2006 onwards to maximize the use of existing maps and information and to provide estimates for wider areas. However, there is no consensus on which methods have produced superior results in the predictive value of soil maps. This study conducts a systematic review of digital soil class mapping in Brazil and aims to analyze the factors which can improve the accuracy of digital soil class maps. Data from 334 digital soil class mapping studies were grouped and analyzed by Student's t-test, Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis test. When conventional maps were used for validation, the studies showed average values of 63 % and when field samples were used, 56 % for...

Geomorphometric tool associated with soil types and properties spatial variability at watersheds under tropical conditions Scientia Agricola
Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Menezes,Michele Duarte de; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Góes,Helen Thaís Pereira de; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT The application of quantitative methods to digital soil and geomorphological mapping is becoming an increasing trend. One of these methods, Geomorphons, was developed to identify the ten most common landforms based on digital elevation models. This study aimed to make a quantitative assessment of the relationships between Geomorphons units, determined at three spatial resolutions and nine radii, and soil types and properties of two watersheds with different soil-landscape relationships in Brazil to help soil surveying and mapping under tropical conditions. The study was conducted at Lavrinha Creek (LCW) and Marcela Creek (MCW) watersheds, located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Spatial resolutions of 10, 20 and 30 m were the basis for...

Hydraulic conductivity and water retention in leptosols-regosols and saprolite derived from sandstone, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Araújo Pedron,Fabrício de; Fink,Jessé Rodrigo; Rodrigues,Miriam Fernanda; Azevedo,Antonio Carlos de.
Leptosols and Regosols are soils with a series of restrictions for use, mainly related to the effective depth, which have been poorly studied in Brazil. These soils, when derived from sedimentary rocks should be treated with particular care to avoid environmental damage such as aquifer contamination. The purpose of this study was to verify the behavior of hydraulic conductivity and water retention capacity in profiles of Leptosols and Regosols derived from sandstone of the Caturrita formation in Rio Grande do Sul state. The morphology, particle size distribution, porosity, soil density (Ds), saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), basic water infiltration in the field (BI) and water retention were determined in soil and saprolite samples of six soil...

Hydropedology Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Curi,Nilton.
Pedology consists of a sub-area of Soil Science that studies the soil and its origin as well as its inter-relationship with the landscape. Hydrology is the science that studies the water in nature in its different mediums (atmosphere, soil and rock), using the watershed as a reference for analysis of the water dynamics and also its interaction with the landscape. The relationship between these two branches of knowledge has been the object of debate and analysis in recent years, contributing to the creation of a multidisciplinary science, which seeks to integrate the respective fields of research. As such, for Hydrology, Pedology has been fundamental for enabling a foundation for the processes associated to the generation of runoff and groundwater recharge,...

Individualization of soil classes by disaggregation of physiographic map polygons PAB
Costa,José Janderson Ferreira; Giasson,Elvio; Silva,Elisângela Benedet da; Campos,Alcinei Ribeiro; Machado,Israel Rosa; Bonfatti,Benito Roberto; Bacic,Ivan Luiz Zilli.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to disaggregate the polygons of physiographic map units in order to individualize the soil classes in each one, representing them as simple soil map units and generating a more detailed soil map than the original one, making these data more useful for future reference. A physiographic map, on a 1:25,000 scale, of the Tarumãzinho watershed, located in the municipality of Águas Frias, in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, was used. For disaggregation, three geomorphometric parameters were applied: slope and landforms, both derived from the digital terrain model; and an elevation map. The boundaries of the physiographic units and the elevation, slope, and landform maps were subjected to cross tabulation to identify...

Mapping soils in two watersheds using legacy data and extrapolation for similar surrounding areas Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Pelegrino,Marcelo Henrique Procópio; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Menezes,Michele Duarte de; Silva,Elidiane da; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Existing soil maps (legacy data) associated with digital mapping techniques are alternatives to obtain information at lower costs, however, tests are required to do it more efficiently. This study had as objectives to compare different methods to extract information from detailed scale soil maps using decision trees for mapping soil classes at two watersheds in Minas Gerais, validate these maps in the field and use the best method to extrapolate information to larger areas, also validating these maps of larger areas. Detailed soil maps of Vista Bela creek (VBW) and Marcela creek (MCW) watersheds were used as source of information. Seven methods to extract information from maps were compared: the whole polygon, eliminating 20 and 40 m from the...
